Job Description of Telecommunicator

General Definition of Work:

Typical Task:

Operates a two-way radio and other communications equipment in the receiving and transmitting of public safety calls. Dispatches appropriate public safety entity.

Work involves responsibility for receiving, recording and dispatching work by telephone or radio. Calls are received for Fire Services, E.M.S. Services, Law Enforcement and other public entities that may be deemed as after hours emergency, where upon an employee in this classification contacts the appropriate personnel to be dispatched, giving all pertinent information. A dispatcher must be familiar with departmental procedures and have some knowledge of the street locations of the county.

While work is performed under the general supervision of the shift supervisor, the employee is expected to exercise independent and sound judgement in the handling of the emergency situation.

Typical Task:

Receives calls by E-911 system, telephone or radio for Fire Department, E.M.S., Law Enforcement and other entities as required.
Determines by inquiry the exact location of the place or point of emergency and dispatches the proper personnel.
Transmits such messages as may be necessary in conducting operations.
Keeps necessary records regarding calls and complaints, communications, and/or E-911 operations. Compiles data from records kept into various daily, monthly, or other periodic reports.
Maintains communications records and files. Provides routine assistance and information to the general public where possible and appropriate.
Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Some knowledge of federal and state regulations governing transmission by radio.
Some knowledge of the methods of operating and communication system.
Good knowledge of geography and the road system throughout the county.
Skill in detecting the scope and magnitude of an emergency.
Ability to speak distinctly.
Ability to maintain accurate records.
Ability to deal with public under stressful conditions.

Education And Experience
The following standards express the minimum background of training and experience DESIRABLE as evidence of an applicant's ability to qualify for positions of this class. Other training or experience, if evaluated as equivalent, may qualify the applicant for the position.

Completion of a standard high school course of study or its recognized equivalent. Some experience as a radio operator and computer experience; preferred.

Special Requirements:
Must be eligible for the necessary licenses prescribed by the
Federal Communications Commission.
Must meet all minimum state requirements for GCIC/NCIC terminal full operator within time allowed by state requirements.
Must be able to type minimum of twenty (20) words per minute. Working rotating shifts, holidays and weekends required.
